Commands

execute this after installing new classes or style files:¹⁾ texhash
shows the search path in TeX variable TEXMF:²⁾ kpsewhich –expand-var '$TEXMF'
shows the search path where makeindex looks for *.ist files: kpsewhich –show-path ist

Files

~/texmf: private root directory for TeX files (see also output of kpsewhich –expand-var '$TEXMFHOME' )
/etc/texmf/texmf.cnf: TeX (Live) and Kpathsea configuration file (a generated file, see man update-texmf)
/etc/tex4ht/tex4ht.env: TeX4ht configuration file

Generates all ls-R files new.

²⁾

Other TeX variables are TEXMFHOME and TEXMFLOCAL.
